 SUBS USED: JORDI, RAYMOND, SEAN

GAME SUMMARY:

H/F time 0-2 F/T 3-4

Finally, a return to action an arctic enforced break of around 3 years…or at least so it seems.  More spare tyres on some boys in the dressing room than in that garage for epileptics – Kwik Fit.

Impressively though, with virtually a full strength squad returning, Abronhill looked like we’d never been away in the first half.  Totally dominant first half, sound defence and the midfield 5 winning virtually every 50:50 ball ensured that we were 2-0 up and cruising at half time.  A crunching tackle from Joe with the ball swept out quickly to Billy who in turn split the defence for Tommy to run in behind and coolly slot the 1st when one on one with the keeper.

Billy then cut in from the left and cut back for yours truly to hit a clinical (mis-hit), rasping (trundling), rocket (daisy-cutter) of a shot which wrong footed the keeper and made it’s way in past the scrambling keeper for 2-0.

When Abronhill picked up where they left of at the start of the 2nd, the game looked sealed at 3-0.  Billy got his 1st of the game when he took time (plenty of it by the way) to pick his spot and roll it in following a scramble on the 18 yard line.

However, it wouldn’t be Abronhill if we didn’t make thing difficult for ourselves.  Innes, who had made two great point blank saves in the first half, was helpless to prevent a goal from their big sub whose slightly mis-hit shot bobbled into the corner of the net.  St Columba’s then got within a goal with 12 minutes left with a goal that Innes almost kept out with a great save but could only palm the ball down for an easy tap in.

Billy R Superstar then took the pressure off with just 5 mins left, following up with another cool and composed finished after Jordi had put Kev through only for the keeper to save…how the ball got to Billy R I can only speculate as I was acting it trying to run down the clock!!

And remarkably, St Columba’s still never gave up and they scored another goal hardly worth remembering – static defending from a corner kick when the game looked done.  In truth, the scoreline in this one didn’t really do Abronhill’s performance justice but it’s a vital win to get our season up and running again with a semi-final to look forward to.

Special mention to the 3 guys in the middle of the park – first time Michael, Rosco and Textbook have played together in that formation and it worked a treat.

Back to league action on Sat…C’mon the ‘Hill.
