Abronhill travelled to suburban Giffnock on cup duty this week hoping to make a second final this season. Conditions were perfect as a much changed 'B' team stepped out to face Division A Garnethill in the semi-final of the William Drummond Trophy. Gaffer Jack Spiers kept his promise to make major changes from the first semi-final with Innes Laing, Joe Maguire, Iain Martin, Ross Kennedy, Jordi (sorry, Gordy) Walker and Sean (John) Gallanagh all getting starts. The rest of the starting 11 was made up of gaffer Jack Spiers( As usual), a pre-ban Robert Mason, captain Ants Horan, holding midfielder Michael McQuillan and his brother, the 21 goal man Kevin McQuillan. Subs bench was Tommy Carrigan, Soapy McAllister, Billy Ratcliffe, Danny Flynn and Raymond McCluskey.
The game got off to a flyer, courtesy of Billy Ratcliffe's energising intensive warm-up, and Abronhill banged in four first half goals to surprise Garnethill who probably expected less from a Division B team. Little did they know it was also the so-called Reserve team of the Division B side. Goalscorers were Jordi Walker, Sean Gallanagh and Kevin McQuillan with two - one of which was helped in by a Garnethill defender. Special mention has to go to the 'overhead kick' from Jack Spiers to set up one of the goals. Once the ball was picked out the net the Goalie had to pick the space debris out the ball before the game could restart. Another mention must go to the slide rule pass from midfielder Ross Kennedy to set-up Sean Gallanagh's goal. With Abronhill cruising it should really have been game over early doors, but as usual we had to make things difficult for ourselves by giving Garnethill a lifeline before half-time. A lucky break allowed one of their attackers to bear down on keeper Innes Laing and lob it over him to bring it back to 4-1.
The talk at half-time was positive despite the dangerous situation we were now in. The first-half was played at a frantic pace so it was inevitable that changes would have to be made in the second-half, especially since Garnethill had already used around five subs in the first-half. The early second-half really was all Garnethill and a long argument after a foul and lazy defending at the resulting free-kick gave Garnethill the chance to rifle a shot into the top corner of the Abronhill goal. 4-2, then 4-3 shortly afterwards and things were starting to look a bit shaky. Abronhill brought on (some) fresh legs in the form of Billy Ratcliffe for Jordi Walker, Raymond McCluskey for Ross Kennedy and Danny Flynn for Jack Spiers. Garnethill kind of ran out of steam after this and the momentum fell out their game. Abronhill seized on this like a hungry Bear and took back control of the match after Joe Maguire fired a superb ball across the goal mouth for Kevin McQuillan to fire home with his left peg to send Abronhill to the final. Wait, stop the press, our reporter has just confirmed that the ball has in fact hit McQuillan's right boot, then his left, scared off some seagulls behind the goal and has ended up interrupting the Under-8s game on the next pitch. I can confirm that it's still 4-3!! It wasn't 4-3 for much longer though as a goalmouth scramble forced the Garnethill keeper to save a shot from big Sherbet Dib-Dab and Raymond McCluskey pounced to fire the ball home. Seconds to go and Garnethill sent another into the net to make the last few seconds very edgy. Ref blew for the restart then blew straight away for full-time. Game Over and Abronhill made their second final of the season!! Celebrations continued throughout the day and night as the Abronhill team and supporters hit the town (less said about that the better).
